A Negative Narrative

Mi Ami

Here you go then. Taking our prospering (and illicit) Thrill Jockey bromance another step further  - we already got jiggy with High Places and had a stolen moment with Pit Er Pat (so this means we’re on third base now and expecting some serious put-outage) - may we present to you San Franciscan trio Mi Ami, and their inventive, bubbling brew of intoxicatingly cathartic, dub-tastic eclect-ronica.

With the new global depression reaching a cumulative strangulation point and desperation, anxiety and fear stalking the streets, Mi Ami have channelled these uneasy emotions into an urgent, genre-blending slice of tension which somehow fuses the sonic civic identities of Berlin, Detroit and Chicago with a smidgen of dubstep, half a tab of disco fizz and a whole heart of inventive ambience, and ends up sounding like King Tubby, the Velvet Underground and Black Uhuru wrestling in a zero-gravity paddling pool filled with vanilla protons, spliffy neutrons and cosmically charged electrons. Or something equally Afrobeaten-up. With a loosely mapped-out set of coordinates to help them negotiate the time/space continuum, bucketfuls of ideas, and an uncanny knack of being able to transplant all this into your lucky, lucky brain via the medium of your mucky, mucky ears, I think it's safe to say that Mi Ami get our vote for leading this planet head-first into the apocalypso.

They’ve kindly taken some time out from being atmospheric to answer our minor inquisition through the medium of this here imagery. And, if that wasn’t enough, they’ve given us an exclusive remix (by M. Kourie) of Clear Light for you neo-consumers to lap up, download and crack out (just click the MP3 link underneath this). You’ll also be fan-fucking-tastically pleased to know that their new LP (Steal Your Face) is out now. You can buy it here on vinyl, digital download, or one of them old CD things.
