RICHLY EVOCATIVE MODERN MARIACHI

Interview With Roja

RICHLY EVOCATIVE MODERN MARIACHI

Roja are a Liverpool based modern mariachi outfit who released their debut album (Promises I Should Have Kept) through legendary label Probe Plus last month. Their sound recalls the endless horizons and desert landscapes of Ennio Morricone and is soaked in the spirit of spaghetti western soundtracks with triumphant brass, sweeping strings and flamenco guitars forming the richly evocative tapestry. With deliciously dark narratives of narrow escapes and turbulent romance and the distinctive vocal and dry lyricism of frontman Simon Bradshaw, it’s the most thrillingly inventive work from a group of musicians who have played together for nigh on two decades now.

Roja’s first single (The Evil Stands High) represents the album’s poise and power perfectly, with stirring, boozy trumpets and scorched guitars coming on like an outtake from the Kill Bill soundtrack. You can download it for nowt here. The video is below.
