Interview With Gruff Rhys
SUPER FUZZY MANIMAL
This intraview has taken a while. You’ll notice because there’s a question about Christmas. After approaching Gruff via Twitter, we decided to approach this endeavour one question at a time to accommodate the myriad of projects he’s ensconced in.
Since the Super Furry Animals went on indefinite hiatus in 2010 Gruff has releasing two albums; the acclaimed Hotel Shampoo and the slightly insane The Terror Of Cosmic Loneliness (which he recorded with Brazilian TV and VCR repairman Tony Da Gattora). He’s also produced one film (Separado!) – with another (American Interior) on the way, written the music for a popular video-game app (Whale Trail), released a festive single about atheism and collaborated (with Boom Bip) on two mind-meltingly brilliant Neon Neon concept albums (the latest of which – Praxis Makes Perfect – he’s been touring with the National Theatre Wales).
With Gruff’s considered and elaborative interview style and penchant for the absurd this was always going to be great and I’m glad to say it doesn’t disappoint. While you peruse these snaps you’d be advised to give Skylon – a fifteen minute mock-opera-opus about a bomb disposal expert’s finest hour – a spin in our in-site boom box. The video for Neon Neon’s latest single Hammer & Sickle is below.
