Interview With The Great Escape

CRIPPLING IT IN BRIGHTON: A PHOTO DIARY

Recently the bad lads/good eggs/top dogs over at Alcopop! Records headed down to Brighton for The Great Escape festival. We decided that seen as they’d be getting up to all sorts of badness, goodness and ill-advised-ness, that we would set them a photo challenge to document their mischief-making. They duly agreed and obliged with this set of photos which tells the story of their weekend nicely.  Just click on the quote marks by each photo for an explanation.

In case you were unaware Alcopop! Records is an independent record label run by Jack Clothier and Kevin Douch. Since the label was formed in 2006 they’ve worked with the likes of Data.Select.Party, Wolf Am I and The Candle Thieves and have a current roster boasting fight-poppers Johnny Foreigner, agit-rockers Jumping Ships (you can see their intraview here), The Attika State, My First Tooth, the brilliantly-named Screaming Maldini and Ute. As well as traditional releases (they’re almost at the half-century mark) Alcopop! have gained a reputation for their Alcopopular compilation series, which is famed for its innovative release methods. Currently on their fourth offering, Alcopopular has been released as a 3″ CD, a cassette tape, a message in a bottle and a restaurant menu, and has previously featured tracks by the likes of Freelance Whales, The Xcerts, Tellison and Pulled Apart By Horses.

Having given themselves this month off (presumably to recover from The Great Escape) they’ll be coming back strong next month with their Alcopop050 branded jacket and compilation (to celebrate their milestone release) and a new Ute single. August will then see LightGuides release a mini-album and the new Jumping Ships EP outed, with a Johnny Foreigner release, summer party and NBA Jam tournament all thrown in to the mix too. Because they’re nice people they’ve given us three tracks to pass on to you (via this handily attached zip file) to give you a taste of what they do and to accompany these photos. The tracks are:

Heiroglyphics – Stagecoach

Orchards – My First Tooth

Old Bucket Seats – LightGuides
